HP Designjet 3d is a printer that can make 3d prototypes of whatever you specify it to create, within certain limitations.
The HP Designjet 3d printer was developed by Stratasys and they are making them for HP. The first batch of units will be available in May, but only in Europe, to countries like France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
The Designjet 3d is based on the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) technology:
turns three-dimensional CAD drawings into tangible prototypes by extruding partially molten ABS plastic in extremely fine layers one atop the other, forming the entire 3-D model in a single piece from the ground up. Designjet 3D will print in ivory-colored plastic only while Designjet Color 3D will print single-color parts in up to eight different colors (we’re not sure why you can’t just put a different hue of ABS plastic in the Designjet 3D).
The HP Designjet 3d printer is great for any type of businesses or people that need to churn out quick prototypes. Think about it, a designer, an architect, a sculptor… all of them would be able to show a quick piece to management, employees or other company’s executives thinking about who to give the license to. This could change or at least make things a lot of easier for everyone. And think about how this could be used in other venues: how about sex toys, lol…
It will be selling in Europe for €13,000, or $17,000, and I’m sure it will be in the US and world wide later on. There is no exact word on the quality of the prototypes the Hp Designjet 3d can make but I think we’ll find out soon enough.
By the way don’t forget to check this place that was on top of the hour with the printer announcement:
